    Ravelympics
Um, yeah, I'm crazy. Or hopelessly optimistic. I have joined my fellow fiber-holics over in Ravelry and jumped on the Ravelympic bandwagon.

And I'm doing a Lyra. By Herbert Niebling. In 17 days. Let the insanity, er, games begin!

Okay, not that anyone is gonna miss me, but I'm over here just in case you're wondering.

    Best Podio Book Ever
Okay. I know. I hardly ever post. But I have a new loptop (hi, Jess!) and a relatively new IPod and have just recently found Podiobooks.com.

I started out listening to librivox.org's wonderful literary selection. Fell in love with PG Wodehouse, Arnold Bennett, Jerome K. Jerome, all wonderful Edwardian writers with a wry sense of humor. The readings all varied, depending on the reader (duh!) but the stories were wonderful.

I have now found my favorite Edwardian writer. A.F Harrold. And my favorite reader, A.F. Harrold.
Yeah, so what if he was born in the wrong century. If the three writers above had had a love child, and then this child had had a love child with Monty Python (all 5 of them), the end product of all this manly wonderfulness would be A.F. Harrold. (I've done the time-line. It would work.) He's a little bit Edwardian, a little bit Rock 'n Roll. I would immediately run off and be his handmaiden if it weren't for the wonderful man that I am married to (hi, Michael). The planets have all aligned to bring this wonderful man, A.F. Harrold, into my life. (Just as they aligned when I met M. I'm lucky like that.)

Check him out. You won't regret it. Plus I will share Mr. Harrold. Not so much Mr. M.

    'til next year...... :>

p.s. I don't understand why A.F. Harrold's name was not on the list of Parsec nominee's that I just read. I have myself rectified that and nominated him for Best Speculative Fiction long form. Hope he gets more votes. If not, I will have to vote early and often.

edited to add: The two podiobooks above are listed in reverse order. Please listen to Epitome's story before the Miscellany. It will flow better.

Where is my German when I need it?
Okay. Here's the deal. My mother was born into a family of German-speaking peoples. They brought the language over with them in the early 1900's, and spoke it even thru the anti-German sentiments of the 1920's. Then the US went to war with Germany again, and my greatgrandfather announced to the family that we were good Americans and German would NOT be spoken in the home. Okay. Fine.

My father was in the USArmy, and we spent three years in Germany during my teen years. When we came home, we even brought a German friend with us, who spent many years living in our home.

Which all boils down to - Here I am in my early 50's and don't speak a freakin' word of my family's native language. (Okay, maybe I can cuss a few words.) So why in gawd's name have I signed up for not one, but TWO!! German knitting groups?? Because I am addicted to lace knitting, don't have enough stuff going on in my life, and someone needs to whap me with a big stick and cry "Enough!!" repeatedly til it maybe sinks in.

So much for cutting and pasting. The scissors are dull and the paste is dried up. Arrrgh.

What Kind of Knitter Are You?

You appear to be a Knitting Goddess. You are constantly giving and are unconcerned with reward, you simply want others to love knitting as much as you do. If someone wants to knit miles of novelty yarns, you are there for them. If someone wants to learn short row shaping, you can help. There are no taboos in knitting, only opportunities to grow. Everyone should have friend like you around if they want to learn to knit, and there's a good chance that your passion has rubbed off on a few others.http://marniemaclean.com

    Knitting Olympics, Ahoy
With the countdown at about 20 hours, I wonder how many other knitters are literally itching (yes, literally) to get started. I have chosen the Rowan Birch shawl as my project. The challenge for me is actually finishing, including blocking, in the time allowed. I am a great starter, and more than proficient at knitting. But the finishing?? Oh boy. I have scarves, hats, socks, sweaters all waiting around on needles to be picked up "sometime soon".

The yarn I'm using is KnitPicks Paint Your Own laceweight, KoolAid dyed in Tropical Punch, already lovingly hand-rolled and waiting. I'll probably do the shawl from bottom up to take advantage of every inch of the 800 yards of pinky-orangy loveliness that is the yarn. Boye needles are my needles of choice when knitting lace due to their pointiness. They have already been soaked in hot water and hanging on a doorknob to knock out any kinks.

Over 3,000 of us idiots addicts enthuiasts are already waiting at the starting blocks. Let the Games begin!
